Assigning Carnegie Units to Students under Typical High School Age

Given the unique nature of independent study, a student can work at the grade level most appropriate for their ability. Students are always placed in the grade appropriate for their age, but can work at whatever level suites their educational needs. At times, there may be a student that is below the typical high school age that is working at a high school level and should be receiving Carnegie units based on our “Assigning Carnegie Units” policy. Please remember that this is for high school level coursework only.

7th and 8th Grade Students and High School Courses

7th and 8th grade students may take certain high school level courses if the ES thinks that the course is appropriate for the student.

Sky Mountain Charter School requires that two high school courses be taken if the 7th/8th grade student would like to earn high school credit. If the student is not attempting to earn high school credit then taking one course is acceptable. Again, if the student is attempting to earn credit two high school level courses must be taken.

High School Courses Acceptable for 7th and 8th Grade Students

Only the following courses are allowed for 7th and 8th graders attempting to earn high school credit:

Algebra I English 9 Chemistry Foreign Language
Algebra II Earth Science

US Government

World History

Visual & Perf. Arts
Geometry Physics Economics

To assign Carnegie units the ES should create a high school report card for only those courses that are high school level, and a regular grade school report card for any other courses that the student takes that may not be high school level. Questions regarding 7th and 8th grade students taking high school level courses should be directed to your ES.
